| I might actually go to this show. I haven't been since it's grand re-opening. Is it still over-run with drooling iron cross clad white power dicks? Fuck those dudes. |

i just saw agent orange and The Ramones there last thursday, well CJ Ramone. Who ever that is. Haha. But there was no signs of white power jerk offs. This show might be a different story. Who knows. |

CJ Ramone is the bass player that was in the band after Dee Dee was no longer in the band. Also, I'm sure there there will be a lot of white power dicks seeing as how there are multiple HB bands playing, NAZI PARTY! |

| Yes sir you're right. I wasnt expecting much from CJ, he did all the classics. Opened with Blitzkrieg Bop, didnt make it til the end. But he was just as good as i thought it was going to be. It was nothing more than a good cover band but for the people who stayed they enjoyed it.
im hoping the nazi dont show up during Joe's Garage, that would be lame |

It's on the same night as Have Heart/Ceremony. The TSOL show is a killer lineup, but fuck the Galaxy. I find it ironic that at a lot of the shows I went to there security was pummeling kids for stage dives while boneheads were starting fights on the dance floor. I'm bummed that place reopened. |

I believe Jeff didn't get a ticket in time for Have Heart. And being up front in the barricade for a few of those shows I can attest to the fact that security did pummel kids coming over the barricade. |

It's been quite a while since the morons have had something to go to and there haven't been too many older/reunion bands playing locally and the Smut Peddlers are finished, so I'm sure the show will be lovely. |

Yeah no shit. Fuck selling tickets for that place. They use you as a funnel for money into their venue and that's it. A certain promoter there asked us a few times to sell tickets there and we refused but said we would still play and put on a good show. Of course that's not how it works with them. |

Joes Garage actually didnt have to sell tickets for this show. Wait they sold pre sale for cheaper than door price. (12 bucks compared to 17 bucks) I think TSOL was the only band that decided to sell tickets. Joes Garage was just offered cheaper tickets for their fans. so i would say thats pretty cool. |

Take a look at the contract they signed and deal with the manager of the galaxy and you'll agree it's not pretty cool. The contract states their ticket sales determine what spot they play on the show. The contract also states that the band will receive free bottled water (I think free beer if all members are 21+, but I was never old enough to have that be an issue). The only free water I ever saw there was what I stole from other band's rooms or the plastic pitcher next to the coffee creamer with beer and spit in it. It's not a whole lot to ask for. Promoters that work with the galaxy, and the galaxy's talent buyers in general only pretend to care about our scene because our money's green. Lots of kids come out to punk shows, so the galaxy jacks up the price, charges for drink tickets (which is basically a two drink minimum), books a headliner and agrees on a guarantee, then (and this is the important part) books a couple of younger punk bands to do all their dirty work to ensure that they really rake in the dough on the show. The younger bands sell the presale tickets (which usually almost covers the guarantee for the headliner in it's self), do 95% of the promotion, bring all their friends, they play early, always have horrible sound, and don't see a dime for all the hard work they've done. Nothing against bands that do this, I was in bands that did this too. I just became tired of the bullshit and realized I could have way more fun playing a punk show at a DIY venue where the only money issue was giving the touring band some gas money to get them to the next show. Southern California is the only place in the country that has venues that do presale tickets. It does nothing to benefit the music scene at large it only puts more money in the pockets of concert promoters and venue owners. This is the reason why I don't play shows where presale is involved and I don't play shows that are 21+. That's not a show, it's a business venture. It's really rare to find people who put on punk shows who actually give a shit about the bands, music, and people involved. |

Everything you said is 100% spot on except for one thing: presale is definitely done in more places than just southern California |

| Jeff is spot on. We used to sell tickets at the Galaxy with KBH and even after several shows of selling 150 or more we were still told we had to do it. The Galaxy likes it when you fulfill their contract needs that you sign but often they don't fulfill their parts on the contract. We used to call them out on this too. So. Cal may not be the only offender of the presale of tickets but its far and away the worst. I grew up in the Houston scene and had many bands playing the biggest punk venues in town without ever selling tickets. We'd get to open for the touring acts like Marky Ramone, Fear, Bouncing Souls etc etc and never had to sell tickets. Granted the scene wasn't as robust as it is out here but the punk shows were packed, all ages AND sported a full bar. You can rarely do that in California. |

| Jeff, i have defiantly seen that happen, mostly at hogue barmichaels but ive seen it. But i would have to say, that last nights show ended up being pretty darn fair to every band that night. Every band got paid, Joe's Garage had a problem with a guitar head for like 20 minutes and the still played a full 45 minute set without anyone yelling at them to get started. I mean other than the crowd. |

Does anyone know who to talk to there and who NOT to talk to in regards to booking? That would be helpful to some bands. |

| Adam is the booking agent for the Galaxy but then you have to realize that most of the headlining (punk & metal) bands that play are booked by Artist Worldwide (Chuck Bernal). The problem stems from headliners not being able to draw enough people to cover the amount (guarantee) they demand and most people that book venues have no idea what that band can draw on any given night. This is the reason pay-to-play (selling tickets to open a larger show or festival) came into being. Too many venues had big losses to cover since the band didn't draw the size crowd that was expected. Plain and simple. This practice opens the door to any band (whether they have experience or not) to play any show as long as they pay the required amount to the venue the night of the show. It doesn't mean they even have to sell the tickets in the first place as long as the venue gets its money.
California is not the only place that this practice has found a niche. It is everywhere. If you don't believe me, have a look for yourself... http://www.myspace.com/neverpaytoplay |

| If the "headliners" can't draw then have them sell tickets as well. That is fair. |

| Technically, they are selling tickets by their name being a headliner but in this day and age what a headlining band draws can vary quite a bit from city to city. The trouble seems to arise when a promoter is not aware of what a headlining band draws in their city. Headlining bands tend to play the same venues/cities so if a promoter has half a clue he can usually figure out what a particular headliner will draw but then most promoters are a clueless bunch.
In regards to the Galaxy & Coach House, Adam has been the local/national talent buyer for them for many years. Adam also tends to take the easy way when it comes to booking shows... book Artist Worldwide bands for the majority of the shows. After all, Ezzat of SOS Records trusts him to book his bigger punk bands and he also has a lot of fairly popular (maybe back in '85) hair metal bands. Adam also knows from past experience that in southern California there are more than enough half assed punk & metal bands that would pay good money just to be able play on the same show with these headliners (point of fact... "Adam doesn't like or listen to punk or metal music" source: OC Weekly). Until any of these venues or promoters run out of bands willing to sell tickets just for a slot to play on a particular show, this practice is going to be used. |

shouldn't it be 138 tickets? anyway love Joe's Garage but I hope that they will eventually stop doing pay to play. given that they are a band with a solid following and are well connected I would think that they would have no problem getting on gigs without having to do the footwork for the promoters. |

shouldn't it be 138 tickets? anyway love Joe's Garage but I hope that they will eventually stop doing pay to play. given that they are a band with a solid following and are well connected I would think that they would have no problem getting on gigs without having to do the footwork for the promoters. |
First off, excellent misfits joke. Second, you're very right. Joe's Garage has a pretty strong following of kids in the orange county area. They brought like 20 kids to a dimly-lit baseball field in the middle of the night for a generator show which was announced only a few hours before. That fucking rules. |

| Of course, they will have to sell a large number of tickets. The Misfits guarantee is ridiculous.
Just think about it... one band has to sell 120 tickets at $23.00 (advanced ticket price) = $2760.00. Now, multiply that by 3 ($2760 x 3) giving you a grand total of $8280.00 for 360 tickets sold and approx. 80% of the Misfits guarantee is covered (it would nice to have 80% of your work covered). |

| Ditch you are 100% right. Im pretty sure after the Misfits show they wont be playing a pay to play show unless its a really line up and they are high up but as a band of their size, i cant see them denying a show with the misfits ( a show that will sell out )plus on the ticket they are the last band to play before Misfits, which is a super rad spot. And with the lack of all age venues that arent pay to play, they have no where to play. Its sad but why do you think we are playing park shows? haha.
Also im pretty sure they are selling tickets for 17 and i think its 23 the day of? not sure. |

According to Galaxy's website, tickets are $23 advanced & $25 the day of the show.

Well, you can thank bands, like Joe's Garage, for all age venues in OC being pay-to-play. If bands didn't agree to sell tickets just to play on a show, promoters & venues would have to rethink how they would cover the guarantee for a band like The Misfits (a band that is demanding too much money for what they actually draw). They would have to actually promote their shows and treat their opening bands better or run the risk of shutting down.
The truth is the promoter/venue is worried about this show not selling out (Misfits shows elsewhere have not sold even close to what was expected). If they weren't worried, they wouldn't make bands sell tickets but then it's not just this show they are worried about making the guarantee on, it's all the shows at the venue. Shows that do well help cover the costs of shows that bomb.
Look at it this way... selling tickets for the Galaxy enables them to book the same shitty headliners year after year. |

This is the truth but getting bands to NOT sell tickets is damn near impossible. There would have to be a straight up movement where 90% of local bands refused to sell tickets for it to make any changes. That will most likely never happen. Nobody has mentioned Chain Reaction and how lame their booking process is either. Hell, they'll make you sell tickets to a show with zero national acts. |

Actually Chain doesn't always do that, it depends on who is booking it. The head booker does not make bands do that (not that I've heard of at least) however they do a lot of "Breakthru Presents" shows which are all pay to play and there are no national acts normally. So that sucks.... |
